The GFLI database is a database of high-quality datasets for feed ingredients generated by the Global Feed Lifecycle Institute. The Global Feed LCA Institute is an independent feed industry initiative which develops and disseminates Feed Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) database and tools. The objective of the GFLI is to support meaningful environmental assessment of livestock products and to stimulate continuous improvement of the environmental performance in the feed industry. The database is developed in conjunction with the Agri-footprint database and according to the GFLI methodology. The database is generated in batches depending on the finalization of GFLI database projects.

The database of July 2019 contains environmental impact information of 962 main feed ingredients. The list of deliverables is condensed by excluding the start materials, co-products, intermediate products and materials that are not relevant for feed application. In addition to this, the list of deliverables was expanded, these now include:

  • Canadian crop data on province/regional level for different crops – GFLI Canada Project
  • Expansion of feed from fish products – GFLI Fish Feed Project (Under review)
  • Update and revision of market mixes and totals

Note that the products like fish meal and fish oil have not been reviewed yet. Meaning that some changes might be implemented based on the reviewer’s comments, along with the environmental impact of these products.

Different allocation options are now available for the 962 deliverables, these are:

  • Economic allocation
  • Gross energy allocation
  • Mass allocation

The following updates are scheduled for future versions:

  • US processed feed products
  • Brazilian cultivation data of feed products

Please note that the current database contains some US processed feed products and Brazilian cultivations, but these are not from the GFLI US Processing or GFLI Brazil Projects. These products are derived from the Agri-Footprint database.

For each allocation method two types of databases available:

LCA impact data (excel format)

LCI impact results (Excel format): environmental impact results of all 962 deliverables for all three allocations according to the ReCiPe Midpoint Hierarchy method. This method includes the following impact indicators: Global warming (Including LUC); Global warming (excluding LUC); Stratospheric ozone depletion; Ionizing radiation; Ozone formation, Human health; Fine particulate matter formation; Terrestrial acidification; Freshwater eutrophication; Terrestrial ecotoxicity; Freshwater ecotoxicity; Marine ecotoxicity; Human carcinogenic toxicity; Human non-carcinogenic toxicity; Land use; Mineral resource scarcity; Fossil resource scarcity; Water consumption.

By downloading the LCA impact data you agree to the End User License Agreement (downloadable below). Note that products that are highlighted in orange are “obsolete” products, meaning that more specific products are available in the datasets.

LCI system process data (CSV format)

LCI system process data (CSV format only): LCI system process data are (aggregated) system process data that could be imported into SimaPro or other software for further analysis.
